148. William Learned (c. 1581–1646)

William Learned was born about 1581 and he died on 1 March 1645/6 in Woburn. He married first Goodith Gilman on 22 April 1606 in St. Olave, Southwark, Surey. He married second Jane Unknown. She died on 24 January 1660/1 in Woburn. [1]

Goodith Gillman died after 1632.


William and Goodith migrated in 1630 and they were admitted to the church in Charlestown on 6 December 1632. William was admitted a freeman on 14 May 1634 and he was a selectman in 1636. [1]

On 16 November 1637 William acknowledged his fault in subscribing to the "seditious writing" of Reverend John Wheelwright and asked that his name be crossed out, which it was. [1]

On 26 April 1638 William was a committee "to consider some things tending toward a body of laws &c."

i. Sarah Learned was born about 1607. She married first as his second wife Thomas Ewer on 13 January 1623/4 in St. Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey. Thomas was baptised on 10 March 1592/3 in Strood, Kent. He died between 5 June and August 1638. He married first Bridget Hipsley on 13 September 1614 in Strood. She married second Thomas, the son of Reverend John and Hannah (House) Lathrop, on 11 December 1639. Thomas was baptised on 21 February 1612/3 in Eastwell, Kent. He died in 1707. [2]

Sarah Ewer was admitted to the church in Charleston on 12 December 1635. Thomas Ewer was admitted on 8 January 1635/6 and Thomas Lothrop was admitted on 4 May 1637. Thomas moved to Barnstable with his father in 1639. [ENF]

ii. Bethia Learned was baptised on 29 October 1612 in Bermondsey, Surrey. There is no further record of her. [1]

iii. Mary Learned was baptised on 15 September 1615 in Bermondsey. She was buried on 26 July 1625 in Bermondsey. [1]

iv. Abigail Learned was baptised on 30 September 1618 in Bermondsey. There is no further record of her. [1]

v. Elizabeth Learned was baptised on 25 March 1621 in Bermondsey. She married John Hall by 1645. [1]

vi. Isaac Learned was baptised on 25 February 1623/4 in Bermondsey. He died on 8 (10) 1657 in Chelmsford. He married Mary Stearns. [1]
